The following table is an overview of Chinese courses. Please note there are two different tracks for all CHIN-titled courses — heritage and non-heritage. Students should register in appropriate tracks and levels according to their language background. To see detailed course description, please click on any course.

CHIN131 Basic Chinese I: Part 1 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Mandarin Chinese, an active vocabulary of about 250 Chinese words, and basic grammar. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 131 or CHIN 101 or CHIN 134.

CHIN133 Basic Chinese I: Part 2 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 131. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 133 or CHIN 103 or CHIN 134.

CHIN141 Basic Chinese I: Part 1 (Heritage) Sections

Skills in listening to and speaking Mandarin and reading and writing modern written Chinese. Emphasis on reading and writing. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 141 or CHIN 111 or CHIN 144.

CHIN143 Basic Chinese I: Part 2 (Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 141. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 143 or CHIN 113 or CHIN 144.

CHIN231 Basic Chinese II: Part 1 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Mandarin Chinese, active vocabulary of about 750 Chinese words, and basic grammar. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 231 or CHIN 105 or CHIN 234.

CHIN233 Basic Chinese II: Part 2 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 231. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 233 or CHIN 107, or CHIN 234.

CHIN241 Basic Chinese II: Part 1 (Heritage) Sections

Skills in listening to and speaking Mandarin and reading and writing modern written Chinese. Emphasis on reading and writing. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 241 or CHIN 115 or CHIN 244.

CHIN243 Basic Chinese II: Part 2 (Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 241. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 243 or CHIN 117 or CHIN 244.

CHIN331 Intermediate Chinese I: Part 1 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and understanding of Chinese culture. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 331 or CHIN 201 or CHIN 334.

CHIN333 Intermediate Chinese I: Part 2 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 331. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 333 or CHIN 203 or CHIN 334.

CHIN335 Intermediate Chinese II: Part I (Non-Heritage) Sections

Skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and better understanding of Chinese culture. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 335 or CHIN 205 or CHIN 338.

CHIN337 Intermediate Chinese II: Part 2 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 335. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 337 or CHIN 207 or CHIN 338.

CHIN341 Intermediate Chinese I: Part 1 (Heritage) Sections

Integrated skills in modern Chinese. Focus on reading, writing, and better understanding of Chinese culture. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 341 or CHIN 211 or CHIN 344.

CHIN343 Intermediate Chinese I: Part 2 (Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 341. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 343 or CHIN 213 or CHIN 344.

CHIN345 Intermediate Chinese II: Part I (Heritage) Sections

Integrated skills in modern Chinese. Focus on reading, writing, and better understanding of Chinese culture. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 345 or CHIN 215 or CHIN 348.

CHIN347 Intermediate Chinese II: Part 2 (Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 345. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 347 or CHIN 217 or CHIN 348.

CHIN388 Introduction to Classical Chinese I (Non-Heritage) Sections

The basics of classical Chinese grammar, with short illustrations from texts of the Warring States and early Han Period. Credit will be granted for only one of CLCH 389 or CHIN 388.

CHIN401 Advanced Chinese Reading and Writing I (Non-Heritage) Sections

Reading and writing skills addressing social, cultural, and economic issues. Can be taken concurrently with CHIN 405. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 401 or CHIN 301 or CHIN 404.

CHIN403 Advanced Chinese Reading and Writing II (Non-Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 401. Can be taken concurrently with CHIN 407. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 403 or CHIN 303 or CHIN 404.

CHIN405 Advanced Chinese Speaking and Writing I (Non-Heritage) Sections

More formal styles of oral and written communication. Can be taken concurrently with CHIN 401. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 405 or CHIN 305 or CHIN 408.

CHIN407 Advanced Chinese Speaking and Writing II (Non-Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 405. Can be taken concurrently with CHIN 403. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 407 or CHIN 307 or CHIN 408.

CHIN415 Media Chinese I (Heritage) Sections

Reading and understanding Chinese as used in newspapers, radio/TV, and the internet news. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 415 or CHIN 309.

CHIN435 Business Chinese I (Heritage) Sections

Reading, writing, and presentation skills in business documentation, focusing on technical Chinese as used in the workplace. Emphasis on specialized vocabulary and development of communicative competence as relevant to advertising, the stock market and E-commerce. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 435 or CHIN 321.

CHIN461 Early Classical Chinese Poetry (to Han) Sections

Readings in classical poetry from the pre-Qin to the end of the Han Dynasties, at an advanced level. Not to be taken concurrently with any of the following CHIN 400-level language courses: CHIN 441/ 443/ 444/ 445/ 447/ 448/ 435/ 437. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 461 or CHIN 464.

CHIN463 Early Classical Chinese Poetry (Han to Tang) Sections

Readings in classical poetry from the Six Dynasties to early Tang, at an advanced level. Not to be taken concurrently with any of the following CHIN 400-level language courses: CHIN 441/ 443/ 444/ 445/ 447/ 448/ 435/ 437. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 463 or CHIN 464.

CHIN466 Chinese Martial Arts Fiction Sections

Chinese martial arts fiction as a form of cultural expression first created in classical Chinese fiction and then evolved into contemporary popular literature.

CHIN467 Artistic Images in Chinese Literature from the Bronze Age to the Tang Sections

Visual and material forms of Chinese culture, as represented in literary texts, from 1046 BCE to 978 CE. Emphasis on the interplay between images and words in the formation of ideas and cultures.

CHIN468 Artistic Images in Chinese Literature from the Song to the Present Sections

Visual and material forms of Chinese culture, as represented in literary texts, from 1082 to 2020. Emphasis on the interplay between images and words in the formation of ideas and cultures.

CHIN471 Later Classical Chinese Poetry (Tang) Sections

Readings in classical poetry from the time of Du Fu (712-770) to the end of the Tang Dynasty, at an advanced level. Not to be taken concurrently with any of the following CHIN 400-level language courses: CHIN 441/ 443/ 444/ 445/ 447/ 448/ 435/ 437. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 471 or 474.

CHIN473 Later Classical Chinese Poetry (after Tang) Sections

Readings in classical poetry from the Song to the Qing dynasties, at an advanced level. Not to be taken concurrently with any CHIN courses lower than 400-level. Not to be taken concurrently with any of the following CHIN 400-level language courses: CHIN 441/ 443/ 444/ 445/ 447/ 448/ 435/ 437. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 473 or 474.

CHIN481 Modern Chinese Literature I (Heritage) Sections

Selected readings from the May Fourth Era to present. Not to be taken concurrently with any of the following CHIN 400-level language courses: CHIN 441/ 443/ 444/ 445/ 447/ 448/ 435/ 437. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 481 or CHIN 484.

CHIN483 Modern Chinese Literature II (Heritage) Sections

Historical continuation of CHIN 481. Not to be taken concurrently with any of the following CHIN 400-level language courses: CHIN 441/ 443/ 444/ 445/ 447/ 448/ 435/ 437. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 483 or CHIN 484.

CHIN485 Contemporary Chinese Fiction in Film Sections

Contemporary Chinese films from the 21st century adapted from literary works.

CHIN489 Reading Modern Sinophone Literature Sections

Sinophone literature produced beyond mainland China after 1949 as a dynamic part of understanding cultural "Chineseness" in its local, communal and global context.

CHIN491 Classical Chinese I (Heritage) Sections

The development of early Chinese from the classical period through the Six Dynasties (5th century BCE to 6th century CE). Not to be taken concurrently with any of the following CHIN 400-level language courses: CHIN 441/ 443/ 444/ 445/ 447/ 448/ 435/ 437. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 491 or CHIN 431 or CHIN 494.

CHIN493 Classical Chinese II (Heritage) Sections

Focus in on the Tang and Song dynasties (617 - 1279). Not to be taken concurrently with any of the following CHIN 400-level language courses: CHIN 441/ 443/ 444/ 445/ 447/ 448/ 435/ 437. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 493 or CHIN 433 or CHIN 494.
