Advanced Modern Chinese — Reading and Writing II (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 403 (3 credits) (3hrs/week)

Read and write the language like a pro.  CHIN 403 is a continuation of CHIN 401 for non-heritage students at an advanced level. The course revolves around the textbook and in-class activities aiming to expand on students a vocabulary, stock phrases and word collocations; solidifying, expanding, and refining the fundamental knowledge of Chinese grammar;  developing students’ reading strategies for the comprehension of sophisticated materials dealing with dynamic social and cultural phenomena; and improving students’ speaking and writing skills to cope with topics about social, cultural and economic issues.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Advanced-Mid/High Level Language Proficiency.

Textbook : Reading Into a New China Volume 2 (Duanduan Li & Irene Liu, 2010)

Prerequisite : CHIN 401 or equivalent

Placement interview : required (except for continuing students with advancement approval from previous class)

Continued Area of Study : CHIN 405 or 408

Continuation of CHIN 401. Can be taken concurrently with CHIN 407. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 403 or CHIN 303 or CHIN 404.
