Advanced Chinese Language Courses for Non-heritage Students

Advanced Modern Chinese– Reading and Writing I

CHIN 401 (3) – Term 1 (3hrs/week) (for non-heritage students)

Read and write the language like a pro.  CHIN 401 is an advanced Chinese course for non-heritage students with a focus on reading and writing. The course revolves around the textbook and in-class activities aiming to expand on students a vocabulary, stock phrases and word collocations; solidifying, expanding, and refining the fundamental knowledge of Chinese grammar;  developing students’ reading strategies for the comprehension of sophisticated materials dealing with dynamic social and cultural phenomena; and improving students’ speaking and writing skills to cope with topics about social, cultural and economic issues.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Advanced-Low/Mid Level Language Proficiency.

Textbook : Reading Into a New China Volume 1 (Duanduan Li & Irene Liu, 2010)

Prerequisite : CHIN 337, 338 or equivalent

Placement interview : required (except for continuing students with advancement approval from previous class)

CHIN401 Advanced Chinese Reading and Writing I (Non-Heritage) Sections

Reading and writing skills addressing social, cultural, and economic issues. Can be taken concurrently with CHIN 405. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 401 or CHIN 301 or CHIN 404.

Continuation of CHIN 401. Can be taken concurrently with CHIN 407. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 403 or CHIN 303 or CHIN 404.

Advanced Chinese – Speaking and Writing I

CHIN 405 (3) – Term 1 (3hrs/week) (for non-heritage students)

Speak the language like a pro. CHIN 405 focuses on developing speaking and writing skills for non-heritage students at the advanced level. Students will be actively engaged in communicative tasks that require the use of the new vocabulary, grammatical patterns, discourse device, and cultural information. By the end of the semester, students are expected to be able to conduct conversation and discussion with standard Mandarin pronunciation and appropriate cultural manners. Writing assignments related to different topics discussed in class are designed to reinforce learned knowledge and improve students’ writing skills in Chinese.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Advanced-Low/Mid Level Language Proficiency.

Prerequisite : CHIN 337, 338 or equivalent

More formal styles of oral and written communication. Can be taken concurrently with CHIN 401. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 405 or CHIN 305 or CHIN 408.

Speak the language like a pro. CHIN 407 is a continuation of CHIN 407. The course focuses on developing speaking and writing skills for non-heritage students at the advanced level. Intensive Advanced Modern Chinese– Reading and Writing

CHIN 404 (6) – Summer Term (6hrs/week)  (for non-heritage students)

Read and write the language like a pro in no time. CHIN 404 is an intensive combination of CHIN 401 and CHIN 403 for non-heritage students at an advanced level. The course revolves around the textbook and in-class activities aiming to expand on students a vocabulary, stock phrases and word collocations; solidifying, expanding, and refining the fundamental knowledge of Chinese grammar;  developing students’ reading strategies for the comprehension of sophisticated materials dealing with dynamic social and cultural phenomena; and improving students’ speaking and writing skills to cope with topics about social, cultural and economic issues.

Introductory Modern Chinese Literature I (Non-Heritage)

CHIN 451 (3)-term 1 (3 hrs/week)

Read into the modern literature. CHIN 451 is a reading-intensive introduction to modern Chinese literature from 1900 to 1949, with a focus on fiction. Students will experience the fictional literature by influential Chinese writers during the time frame.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Advanced-Mid Level Language Proficiency.

Prerequisite : All of CHIN 403, CHIN 407 (or equivalent) or the permission of the instructor

Read into the modern literature. CHIN 451 is a continuation of CHIN 451 for non-heritage students. CHIN 453 is a reading-intensive introduction to modern Chinese literature from 1949 to present, with a focus on fiction. Introductory Pre-Modern Chinese Literature I (Non-Heritage)

CHIN 455 (3)-term 1 (3 hrs/week)

Weird and supernaturals in the Chinese history. CHIN 455 is a reading-focused course for non-heritage students. The course focuses on  selected texts of early fiction, including stories of the strange and supernatural from the Han and Six Dynasties and romances from the Tang Dynasty.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Advanced-Mid Level Language Proficiency.

Introductory Pre-Modern Chinese Literature II (Non-Heritage)

CHIN 457 (3)–term 2 (3 hrs/week)

CHIN 457 is a reading-focused course for non-heritage students. The course focuses on selected texts written in vernacular Chinese, including drama from the Yuan and Ming dynasties and fiction from the Yuan through the Qing dynasties.
