Non-Intensive Basic Chinese II – Part I

CHIN 241 (3) – Term 1 (4hrs/week)

CHIN 241 is a continuation of CHIN 141, or CHIN 144, for heritage language learners . Building upon the foundation laid by previous courses, this course continues to develop students’ communicative competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in spoken Mandarin and modern written Chinese, with special emphasis on reading and writing. By the end of CHIN 241, students are expected to be able to master an active vocabulary of 900 Chinese characters, to have a good command of most of the basic grammar, idiomatic expressions, sentence patterns, Mandarin pronunciation, and especially reading and writing skills in the Chinese language.

Prerequisite : CHIN 143, 144 or equivalent

Placement interview : required (except for continuing students with advancement approval from previous class)

CHIN 243 (3) – Term 2 (4hrs/week)

CHIN 243 is a continuation of CHIN 241 for heritage language learners . This course continues to develop students’ communicative competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in spoken Mandarin and modern written Chinese, with special emphasis on reading and writing. By the end of CHIN 243, students are expected to be able to master an active vocabulary of 1,200 Chinese characters, to have a good command of the basic grammar, idiomatic expressions, sentence patterns, to conduct short conversations and discussion with standard Mandarin pronunciation, to comprehend and write short stories and essays in modern Chinese.

Intensive Basic Chinese II – Part II

CHIN 244 (6) – Term 2 (8hrs/week)

CHIN 244 is a continuation of CHIN 144, the second intensive introductory course for heritage language learners who have native or near-native speaking ability in Chinese, but want to develop their reading and writing skills. By the end of CHIN 244, students are expected to be able to master an active vocabulary of 1,200 Chinese characters, to have a good command of the basic grammar, idiomatic expressions, sentence patterns, to conduct short conversations and discussion with standard Mandarin pronunciation, to comprehend and write short stories and essays in modern Chinese.
