Advanced Modern Chinese– Reading and Writing I

CHIN 401 (3 credits) (3hrs/week)

Read and write the language like a pro.  CHIN 401 is an advanced Chinese course for non-heritage students with a focus on reading and writing. The course revolves around the textbook and in-class activities aiming to expand on students a vocabulary, stock phrases and word collocations; solidifying, expanding, and refining the fundamental knowledge of Chinese grammar;  developing students’ reading strategies for the comprehension of sophisticated materials dealing with dynamic social and cultural phenomena; and improving students’ speaking and writing skills to cope with topics about social, cultural and economic issues.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Advanced-Low/Mid Level Language Proficiency.

Textbook : Reading Into a New China Volume 1 (Duanduan Li & Irene Liu, 2010)

Prerequisite : CHIN 337338 or equivalent

Placement interview : required (except for continuing students with advancement approval from previous class)

CHIN401 or CHIN405 Students –> Progress to CHIN403 or CHIN407, respectively

CHIN400 level is the highest level of non-heritage language courses.

You can take CHIN403 after CHIN401. You can take CHIN407 after CHIN405. The pair of CHIN401/403 is at the same level as CHIN405/407.

If you haven’t taken CHIN401 in Term 1, you can’t take CHIN403 in the second term. And if you haven’t taken CHIN405 in Term 1, you can’t take CHIN407 in the second term.

After taking BOTH pairs, i.e. CHIN401/403 and CHIN405/407, you can consider some lower-level heritage courses to increase your proficiency level. You may also consider the heritage CHIN435/437 Business Chinese course if you are interested in the field.
