Suggested Course Plan

Suggested Course Plan for Non-heritage Students Majoring in Chinese

According to the Department of Asian Studies, the major of Asian Language and Culture requires 48 credits, of which at least 27 must be in senior-level language study.

Those 27 credits must include:

  • 12 credits: 300-level CHIN
  • 12 credits: 400-level CHIN (excluding CHIN 491/493)
  • 3 credits: *CHIN 388 (Non-heritage Classical Chinese) or CHIN 491/493 (Classical Chinese for Heritage Students)

Students with little or no prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese may be required to earn up to 12 credits in that language before they can begin to take the senior-level language courses. However, they will still be required to earn 27 upper-division credits in addition to those 12 lower-division credits.

This may end up to 60 credits and requires a careful and timely plan for you to graduate in time. In order to help our non-heritage students who want to major in Chinese, we provide the following “suggested course plan” for their reference.
