Intermediate Chinese Language Courses for Non-heritage Students

Non-intensive Intermediate Chinese I Part 1 (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 331 (3) – Term 1 (4hrs/week)

Encountering everyday scenarios like a pro! CHIN 331 is a continuation of CHIN 234 with a holistic approach to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of the Chinese language at the intermediate level for non-heritage students. The course emphasizes on learning how to act and react during situations such as shopping or choosing your next residences. The course incorporates face to face oral practices as an opportunity for students to practice their communication skills.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Intermediate-High Level Language Proficiency.

Textbook : Integrated Chinese (Simplified Character 3rd Edition) Level 2, Part 1

 

Prerequisite : CHIN 233, 234 or equivalent

Placement interview : required (except for continuing students with advancement approval from previous class)

CHIN331 Intermediate Chinese I: Part 1 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and understanding of Chinese culture. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 331 or CHIN 201 or CHIN 334.

Non-intensive Intermediate Chinese I Part 2 (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 333 (3) – Term 1 (4hrs/week)

Encountering everyday scenarios like a pro! CHIN 333 is a continuation of CHIN 331 with a holistic approach to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of the Chinese language at the intermediate level for non-heritage students. The course emphasizes on learning how to act and react during situations such as looking for a part time job or qualities people have when choosing their significant others. The course incorporates face to face oral practices as an opportunity for students to practice their communication skills.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Intermediate-High Level Language Proficiency.

CHIN333 Intermediate Chinese I: Part 2 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Continuation of CHIN 331. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 333 or CHIN 203 or CHIN 334.

Non-intensive Intermediate Chinese II Part 1 (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 335 (3) – Term 1 (4hrs/week)

Being able to convey your personal opinion in a different language allows us to widen our horizon. CHIN 335 is a continuation course of CHIN 333 for non-heritage students. This course is designed to enhance the core language skills of students while building a deeper conversation with the language. CHIN 335 looks into social concepts such as gender equality or even planning to travel abroad via in-class activities and oral practices with native Chinese speakers.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Intermediate-High Level Language Proficiency.

CHIN335 Intermediate Chinese II: Part I (Non-Heritage) Sections

Skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and better understanding of Chinese culture. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 335 or CHIN 205 or CHIN 338.

Non-intensive Intermediate Chinese II Part 2 (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 337 (3) – Term 1 (4hrs/week)

Being able to convey your personal opinion in a different language allows us to widen our horizon. CHIN 337 is a continuation course of CHIN 335 for non-heritage students at the intermediate level. The course revolves around the textbook and in-class activities to further polish students’ Chinese grammar; the abilities to read expository and narrative writings with familiar vocabulary; writing skills of short essays; speaking skills to cope with real life situations; and an understanding of Chinese culture and society.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Intermediate-High Level Language Proficiency.
