Taking CHIN 143 gave me a safe space where I could practice speaking and writing, so I didn’t feel pressure to speak perfectly fluent Chinese, and I could learn and grow at a pace comfortable to me.

Throughout this project, I learned about the different ways my group mates celebrate Chinese New Years. I gained a greater appreciation of Chinese culture through this, as I realized that the importance of Chinese culture is more about the people and communities that are brought together by participating in these traditions together.

Taking CHIN143 helped me with understanding my family better… When I learned about a cultural story in class, I asked my grandma her version of the story, which brought us an opportunity to have a deeper conversation about our culture.

I think that the CHIN143 course really welcomed me to my traditional Chinese heritage. My Shanghainese family always followed Chinese traditions but I never really felt connected to it. This course has taught me a lot of respect and a lot of why certain traditions come to be.

After completing this project I have a better understanding of the cultural differences between different households around the world…We were able to create a story that demonstrated our understanding of intercultural competency.

This project in Chinese 143 has allowed me to have a better understanding of my self identity. I was able to discover more about my heritage, and I was able to meet many different kinds of people. I thoroughly enjoyed the in person learning experience and highly recommend to everyone to take it as a bonding and personal learning experience.
