Happy 60th Anniversary UBC Asian Studies – Photo Challenge Event


 
In celebration of its 60th anniversary this year, the Department of Asian Studies at UBC is hosting a photo challenge event! 

To celebrate this anniversary, we are inviting all UBC students and alumni to participate in the Happy 60th Anniversary UBC Asian Studies Photo Challenge Event! Students will have the opportunity to visit various Asia-related locations on UBC campus and win a prize from UBC Asian Studies Department Merchandise (Please refer below for the prizes).

NOTE: For CHIN students, you will also have the opportunity to earn a 0.25 bonus mark for your CHIN course by meeting the submission requirements specified in the rubric below. For event bonus mark policy, please refer to “2021W1 CHIN Program Co/Extra-Curricular Events and Event Bonus Marks.” 

Important Dates: 

  • November 15 (Monday): Submissions begin! You can upload your submission by completing the survey through this link.
  • November 29 (Monday): Submissions close! We will be accepting submissions until 11:59pm PST.  
  • December 3 (Friday): Winners for prizes announced! The prizes will be chosen via a draw from the posted works on the social media outlets of the Department of Asian Studies, its language programs as well as area studies programs and initiatives.

  • Take a photo of you (and your friends) at ONE of the designated locations above. The photo requirements are as follows:
    • Contents: Find a creative way to express the number 60 in your photo (e.g. making a sign of 60 with props or gestures, drawing the number 60 on top of the photo, creatively editing the number 60 into the picture, etc.)
    • Size: There is no mandatory size limit, but it is recommended to use 1:1 (square) or 3:4 format (please see three examples below)

  • Submit the photo with a short caption of your memory and/or experience with the Asian Studies-related site in the photo. For students taking CHIN courses, please write a Chinese caption according to the rubric below to receive a 0.25 bonus mark. The event bonus mark policy applies.

    NOTE
    : If you decide to take a group photo, please make sure that each person in the photo separately submits a survey for the bonus mark record and the prize draw. If a group photo wins, the prize will be rewarded to the writer of the selected caption.

  • Please be aware that your submission might be featured on the social media outlets of the Department of Asian Studies, its language programs as well as area studies programs and initiatives so that people can share your memories/experiences and celebrate this special occasion with us! If you would like us to post your submission anonymously, please state it clearly in your submission.
  • Please do NOT depict alcohol, alcohol usage, or scenes of a similar nature in the photo.
  • Please do NOT depict any political and/or controversial figures, icons, etc. in your photo or caption.
  • Please keep your photo PG-13. Inappropriate entries will be discarded!
