On Lunar New Year day, the UBC Chinese Poetry Society (UCPS) had their first gathering at the Asian Center. They shared and recited poetry to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Members of the club include students from 400-leveled Chinese courses, graduate students studying Asian Studies and lecturers from the Chinese Program. Everyone shared their own poems and undergone a wonderful discussion. In “Poetry Expresses Aspiration”, students wrote about their inner emotions – joy, sadness, fear, and nostalgia. Participants’ emotions were moved by the beautiful poems, where they could feel the happiness or melancholy painted in the poem. Poems have the power to touch the inner soul, and are greatly influential. The event started in the afternoon at 4:00 p.m., planned to wrap up at 6:00 p.m., however, everyone was so passionate about Chinese poetry that it eventually extended till 8:30 p.m. As it was approaching late at night, and participants took their leave, it seems the melodies can still be heard…
