The Mid-Autumn Festival Photo Challenge

During quarantine, many have created their own opportunities to get creative in their own homes. The Chinese Language program challenges you to also get creative as we all celebrate one of the biggest Chinese holidays in a new way!


Photo Challenge Guidelines for Participants

SUMMARY

  • Purpose
    • To share culture and have fun celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival
    • To encourage a sense of humour and community in our online space
    • To give students an opportunity to share their creativity
  • What do you need to do?
    • Re-create the picture of Su Shi above!
      Dress up, take a picture, and submit your photo and caption to us for a chance to be featured on the Chinese Language Program Instagram, Facebook, and website. Be creative & have fun!
  • Timeline
    Send your submission by email to joyxie@student.ubc.ca before Friday, October 9th, 11:59pm PST
    (PLEASE READ DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS BELOW FOR MORE INFO!)

    • Thursday, October 1st: Challenge opens! You can begin to submit your images and captions to our email joyxie@student.ubc.ca.
    • Friday, October 9th: Submissions close! We will be accepting submissions until 11:59pm PST. You can still participate after the deadline, but you won’t be eligible to win.
    • Sunday, October 11th: The submissions are revealed on our IG, FB, and website!
    • Monday, October 12th – Thursday, October 15th: Voting period! On top of three winning categories, chosen by a panel of your TAWLs, there will be a popular vote. Go to our Facebook page to vote for your favourite posts! More details to come.
    • Sunday, October 18th: Winners are announced on our IG, FB, and website. The winning photos and captions will be featured on our pages, so keep an eye out for them!

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS

  • The contest opens on Thursday, October 1st, this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival! Below are the requirements for your submission.
    • PHOTO: Imitate the clothing, pose, and composition of the painting of Su Shi. Include as many elements from the original as possible (and make sure to include the moon!)
      • Examples made by our instructors:

      • Examples of other art re-creations done at home
      • The end product does not need to be a photo of you, but it does need to be obviously inspired by the painting.
        i.e. you can re-enact it with your pet, draw it, etc. but the pose, composition, and other image elements should be as similar as possible.
      • Please do NOT depict actual alcohol in the photo, i.e. bottles.
      • Please do NOT depict any political and/or controversial figures, icons, etc. in your photo or caption.
      • Please keep your photo PG-13! Inappropriate entries will be discarded.
    • CAPTION: You must write your caption in Chinese/English/Chinglish. Please try your best to write in Chinese as much as possible!
      • The caption could be what the subject is thinking, your own thoughts, a Mid-Autumn Festival greeting, a creative or funny comment on the picture, etc.
      • Example:
        (Literature class):
        “玉盘美矣,却圆于人散,七年之思,汇于今日,只求与弟子由共赏明月!” “The moon is beautiful, but it is round when people are separated, all the feelings of missing gather in today. All I want to do is appreciating this full moon with my brother Su Zhe.”
        (Language class- novice~Intermediate mid-level):
        “我爱月亮,月亮也爱我。” “I love the moon, the moon loves me, too.”
        “月圆人团圆,希望我爱的人都圆满、平安。” “A full moon and a reunion; my wish is that the people I love are safe and well.”
  • The winning categories are:
    • 1) Most Accurate, 2) Funniest Photo, 3) Best Caption and 4) Fan Favourite
    • Categories 1-3 will be chosen by all program faculty members and TA & Work-Learn students
    • Category 4 will be chosen by an open popular vote
  • Send your submission by email to joyxie@student.ubc.ca before Friday, October 9th, 11:59pm PST
    • Make the subject line “Mid-Autumn Festival Photo Submission” and attach your photo as a .jpg, .jpeg or .png file, submitted along with your caption. If you would like us to credit your photo, please state your IG handle in your email.
    • Your photo and caption might be featured on our Instagram, Facebook, and website! Please tell us in your email if you would like to keep your submission private.
  • The popular vote will take place from Monday, October 12th – Thursday, October 15th on Facebook. Eligible submissions will be posted the day before voting opens to our IG, FB, and website so everyone can see them. Be sure to vote for your favourite by liking the individual photos on Facebook! Vote for as many posts as you’d like.

  • Winners will be announced on Sunday, October 18th, and the winning submissions featured on the Chinese Language Program social media (IG, FB, and website) and newsletter, as well as the Department of Asian Studies newsletter. At this point, you may post your submission to your own social media with the hashtag #UBC_CLP_PhotoChallenge

By participating in this challenge, you give the Chinese Language Program to use and/or post your image and caption on our social media, website, and newsletter, unless you state otherwise in your submission.

重要细则

  • 照片具体内容:模仿出照片内苏轼的穿着、外形、动作、神态以及背景 (尤其是月亮!详情请参考上方英文版的例子)
  • 旁白台词:可以从苏轼的角度去揣摩苏轼内心的想法,亦或者是加入自己原创的有关中秋节的想法以及有关于照片的介绍或评论。需要同时提供中英文旁白。
    • 具体例子:
      • 语言课
