Online singing contest for current post-secondary students taking or having taken Chinese courses in BC, with up to $300 in prizes for 14 winning groups!

Important Details

  • Contestants must be current post-secondary students taking or having taken Chinese courses in British Columbia.
  • Each participating team must consist of 2-15 people.
  • Each team will submit a video link of their team’s performance.
  • The contest will be conducted through two streams: heritage and non-heritage (see below):
  • Students who were born outside of regions and countries with Chinese as an official or social language, but was raised in an environment where Mandarin or another Chinese dialect, including Cantonese, was spoken, who speaks or merely understands the language,

OR

  • Students of non-Chinese origin who have acquired certain level of Chinese language proficiency (especially speaking and listening) by living, studying, or working in a Chinese speaking country/region for an extended time.

*The stream a team participates in is contingent on the team members’ language backgrounds which may or may not be consistent with the courses they are taking. If you are unsure about your qualification, please consult your recommending instructor.

  • Students of non-Chinese origin,

OR

  • Students of Chinese origin born outside of regions and countries with Chinese as an official or social language,who do not speak any Chinese or Chinese dialects, including Cantonese, and whose parents do not speak any Chinese.

Ready for Submission?

【Step 1】 Record and Edit Video

Record your team singing with a device that ensures a high-definition (HD) video quality, and then edit the video with added effects. Please do NOT add a watermark or logo in your video. Save the video in high definition MP4 (1080P) format. See below for detailed instruction.

  • Video Title in English and include the following information:
    • Team name-Institute abbreviation-Full name of the recommending instructor (e.g. Team Bravo-SFU-John Lee.mp4)

Elect Team Leader and Identify Recommending Instructor

Each participating team will need to both elect a team leader and identify a recommending instructor from their own university.

Upload Video to Google Drive

Upload the saved video (high definition MP4 (1080P) format) to your own Google Drive, and then, get an editable link to the video file. Please make sure to set the link as “Editor” mode.

  • If you are not sure how to get an editable link, please refer to the link for a demonstration of link sharing configuration: click HERE.
  • Please note that Google Drive is used for this event. Please be aware of the privacy concerns related to Google and take precautions in using the service.
Submit Video through Qualtics

Note that either the recommending instructor or the team leader will complete the survey on behalf of the team.

Before filling in the survey, you will need the following information:

  • The recommending instructor’s FULL NAME (First Last Names) and email address;
  • The team leader’s FULL NAME (First Last Names) and email address;
  • The Chinese and English names of your team;
  • All team members’ FULL NAME (First Last names) and current Chinese course and section number (or highest level of Chinese course in university).
  • The Google Drive link to the team’s singing video.

Please note that the survey will ask whether each participant has agreed to release their image. By partaking in the contest and submitting the registration form on Qualtrics survey, each participant is consenting to their image release for their videos on public websites for educational purposes. Before answering the pertinent question, the person who fills out the survey should consult all team members to ensure their agreement to the image release.
