【Calendar】
Lunar New Year is a time of celebration, and a time to set our eyes on the new year with good wishes and sentiments! As we welcome the year of the Tiger, we are also welcoming a year of good fortune and hard work. Although the pandemic changed the way people celebrate Lunar New Year and made the previous year challenging, the image of Tiger will offset these ideas by representing strong, powerful and courageous qualities, which are well known in many East Asian cultures. Thus, the Chinese Language program encourages you to get creative as we invite you to celebrate one of the biggest holidays in East Asia with us altogether! Let’s roar unique images and phrases into 2022, which helps each of us regain strength to embrace the upcoming year.
【Purpose】
- To share our cultures with one another, and have fun as we celebrate the Lunar New Year Festival together
- To foster a sense of community and intercultural understanding within our online space
- To give you an opportunity to share your creativity and practice your language use
- To embed intercultural awareness into our language learning curriculum
【Breakdown of language proficiency】
- Based on the course you are taking, you are grouped into a corresponding challenge level as outlined in the table below.

【Detailed Instructions】
Due to the pandemic, the previous year of 2021 was quite challenging for us. In many East Asian cultures, the image of the Tiger represents strong, powerful, and courageous qualities. In order to welcome and embrace such a “powerful” Lunar New Year, you can choose ONE of the following two options to share what has been inspiring you to face such uncertainty and challenges, whereby we can collect enough power to have a great year in 2022.

Step 1:
Take your own photo, or draw your own picture, of a person in your life whose image reminds you of a tiger, as they are strong, powerful and brave. The person you choose could be yourself, your friends, your family members, or a group of people devoting themselves to our society (such as a health care worker, a firefighter, and so on).
Step 2:
Write a short description of:
- Why and how the image of the person reminds you of a tiger’s qualities as believed in Asian culture.
- How the person’s image positively influences you and what you wish to say in response to their inspiration.
Note the Following:
- You can write your caption in simplified OR traditional Chinese.
- The image you submit needs to be original. (Don’t use any online images. Pay attention to copyrights.)
- The number of words required is determined by the courses you are taking. (You may refer to the examples for this task, “An Image of a Person”, below).
Step 3:
Submit your photo and caption through this link.
Step 1:
Choose a quote from a person, whether they are famous or not, who gave you strength to conquer your difficulties and inspired you over the past year. The quote you choose could be in any language. Please tell us what your quote is if your quote is not in Chinese nor English. Please create a photo/ an image in which the quote is shown.
Step 2:
Write a short description of:
- the quote’s brief context/background (E.g. Who said it? In what context?).
- why the quote is so inspiring that you can gain renewed strength/courage to move forward into our new year.
Note the Following:
- You can write your caption in simplified OR traditional Chinese.
- The image with a quote you submit needs to be original. (Don’t use any online images. Pay attention to copyrights.)
- The number of words required is determined by what courses you are taking. (You may refer to the examples for this task, “A Quote from a Person”, below).

My name is Im Ga-Yun. A thief broke into a girl’s home to steal things in 경기도 on December 22nd, 2021. That girl’s neighbor helped her stop the thief and called the police.I really admire the neighbor. Korean people believe tigers represent bravery and protection. In my opinion, the neighbor was as brave as tigers. In addition, he protected that girl. Though life is hard, we should help people more often. |
 大家好，我来自越南。Tết Nguyên Ðán 或者Tết，是我们一年中最重要的节日，节日的第一天是农历新年的前一天，节日会是三天。Tết是一家人团聚的时间，所以很多人都盼望着在Tết前回家，和家人团圆并一起庆祝这个美好的节日。老虎在越南代表勇敢，在这段时间，我觉得最勇敢的人是我的妈妈，她是一名护士，她因工作关系，要照顾患有新冠的病人而不能在Tết前回家，守在疫情前线，我觉得她和所有的医护人员都很勇敢和无私。我想要谢谢他们！

大家好，我来自中国的山西。2022虎年的春节马上就要到了。老虎，也是勇敢、勇猛的象征。今年的我和去年的我相比，也多了许多的勇气和自信。自疫情开始之后，我就被困在了家里。天天龟缩在自己的房间里，面对着发光的电脑屏幕，不知时日。期待的大学生活成了泡影，本身就充满不确定性的未来变得更加岌岌可危。每天面对着新闻报道里的痛苦和死亡却无能为力。作为个体，我在全球范围的疫情面前显得渺小而又无力。我不再相信自己的能力，忍不住否定自己过去所获得的一切，以及将来的可能性。去年夏天的时候，我鼓起勇气踏出了第一步：我参加了一些志愿活动。在这个过程中，我渐渐找回了自己的价值。虽然并不是什么改变世界的重大活动，但是每次完成一个项目都会带来成就感和做事的实感，这给了我自信和勇气去挑战自己曾经恐惧或避而远之的事物，去面对接下来的生活。希望这份勇气也能随着虎年的到来，继续伴随我前行，也希望在不久的将来，我们都能摘下口罩，继续热情地拥抱这个世界！

大家好，我是一个加拿大的学生。在加拿大，First Nation的culture很important。这个quote是一个Anishinaabe descent的actor说的，我觉得他的话encourage我做事情不要怕failure, 让我有strength and courage 去 pursue 我的dreams. |
由於我是一個在馬來西亞長大的華裔學生，王薇薇(Vera Wang)是我一直很欣賞的華裔婚紗設計師。我以後結婚的時候，一定要穿上她設計的婚紗。去年我看了一個她的訪談，她在訪談裡說：「Success is not what defines me, but failure.」這句話讓我更欣賞她。過去一年，因為疫情的關係，我遇到了很多我從來沒想過會發生的挫折。我曾經一度很低落，但是這句話讓我學會不要害怕失敗。因為每一次的失敗，如果我能從中學習，我就能成為一個更好的自己。 新的一年也許還是會遇到很多困難，但我會繼續用那句話給我的勇氣來面對那些新的挑戰。 |
大家春节快乐！我是来自上海的大四学生。在虎年新春之际，我想和大家分享一句令我印象非常深刻的诗歌：“千磨万击还坚劲，任尔东西南北风。”这句诗出自清代文人郑板桥的著名题画诗《竹石》，却传达出了极富动态的诗意，生动刻画出了风中竹石的遒劲之态。更重要的是，这句诗歌在疫情期间一直给予我克服困难的勇气和力量。疫情不仅威胁我们的身体健康，还给我们的精神造成巨大压力，使每个人都身心俱疲。可是每当我觉得疫情漫漫、生活迷茫之时，脑海中便会浮现出郑板桥的这句诗，就好像是迷雾之中突然出现的一道光，驱散我心中的阴霾。让我们把疫情期间的困难看作是诗句中的那些“千磨万击”，经过磨砺的我们将更加“坚劲”。我相信虎年的祥瑞一定会驱散疫情，吞噬病毒，在不久的将来，我们一定会笑对疫情说：“任尔东西南北风。” |

- Please be aware that your video might be featured on our Instagram, Facebook, and website so people can share your wishes and celebrate this special holiday with us! If you would like us to post your video anonymously, please clearly state in your submission.
- Bonus marks only apply to CHIN students.
- Please do NOT depict actual alcohol in the video, i.e. bottles.
- Please do NOT depict any political and/or controversial figures, icons, etc. in your video.
- Please keep your photo PG-13! Inappropriate entries will be discarded.
- Social gatherings are not recommended during the pandemic.
