I wanted to learn Mandarin to better communicate with my family members, and overcome lifelong doubts about this language disconnection. This hard work has paid off, and given me direction in my journey to reconnecting with my cultural identity.
The Chinese learning community at UBC is so supportive! My professor created a fantastic learning environment while also pushing us to try our best… Even when we’re unsure of how to communicate, she tries to meet us halfway and figure out why we’re struggling so she knows how to support our growth.
If I could give advice to my younger self, I would tell her not to be so afraid of making mistakes, as nobody is expecting perfection or fluency in learning Mandarin—it’s how we all learn!
