2025 Lunar New Year Celebration

The Department of Asian Studies will collaborate with the UBC Student Union (AMS) to host an engaging and inclusive event to celebrate the Lunar New Year at the NEST Lower Atrium on Wednesday, January 29, 11:00 am- 5:00 pm. We hope to create a cultural festival that not only showcases traditional customs but also promotes understanding and appreciation of the diverse ways the Lunar New Year is celebrated across Asia. The event kicks off with a Traditional Lion Dance starting at 10:30 am, followed by lively performances, cultural activities, food, fun, and more…

Students are warmly invited to engage in the following activity to earn a bonus mark (0.25 points). We hope you will join us in celebrating cultural diversity and unity! 

 

【2 Ways To Earn Bonus Marks】

Option 1:

  • Attend the event and choose one of the following:
    1. Make a 2-3 minute reflective video
    2. Share an Instagram or RedNote 小红书 story with a reflective portion along with photos/creative elements (0.25 points)

Option 2:

  • If you cannot attend the event in person, please do the following alternative to get a bonus mark: 
    1. Make a 2-3 min video of yourself creating a Lunar New Year art-craft. Don’t forget to introduce yourself in Chinese, tell us what you’ve made and how it is related to the Lunar New Year. Here are 3 examples with guidance for your reference. Feel free to be creative in your choices.

 

【Breakdown of Language Proficiency】

Based on the course you are taking, your the length and quality of the reflection should be equivalent to a corresponding challenge level as outlined in the table below:

【Instructions for Submission】

Please submit your video or a social media story through the following two steps by Friday, February 28, 2025 

Step 1: Submit your work by completing the Qualtrics Survey. 

  • To fill out the survey, please provide the following information:  
    • Your full English name, Chinese name, and current Chinese course with section number. 
    • Include a link to your submission on Google Drive, YouTube, Instagram, RedNote 小红书or other websites. 

***Note: By participating in this activity, you grant the Chinese Language Program the right to use and/or post your work on our social media, website, and newsletter unless you specify otherwise in your submission. 

Step 2: Submit your work to your desired CHIN class’s Canvas page for bonus marks. 

  • Provide the link to your submission on Google Drive, YouTube, Instagram, RedNote 小红书 or other websites.
