2022 BC “Chinese Bridge” Mandarin Singing Contest for Chinese Language Learners in Post-Secondary Institutions

【Format】

  1. Online Preliminary round (线上预赛): Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022 @12 pm PDT ~ Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022 @12 pm PDT
    • Registration form submission through Qualtrics AND
    • Videos uploaded to Google Drive
      • Each team can choose to submit either a live performance video or an online zoom singing performance video.
      • A reminder that Zoom performers will need to prepare for live performance for the final round if selected.
  1. In-person Final Round (线下决赛): Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022 @ 2-5pm
    • Location: AMS (Student Nest), UBC
    • Team Invitation:
      • 14 teams that are ranked at #14 or above from the Preliminary Round will be invited to participate in the Final Round. A few additional teams may be invited to join as non-competing participating teams.
    • Song choices for the Final Round can be different from the preliminary round. Once the Final Round Qualtrics surveys are submitted, song choices cannot be changed.
      • The Qualtrics link will be provided in the Final Round invitation. The Final Round Quatrics submission deadline is Friday, Nov.11@12:00pm.
      • Accompany music (not with singing voices) must be submitted when submitting the Final Round information Qualtrics.
    • No additional individuals can be added in the Final Round, and not all registered members must attend the Final Round if unable as long as the Final Round team still consists of at least 2 members.

Q: Who is eligible to participate?
A: Current post-secondary students taking or having taken Chinese courses in British Columbia.

Q: How many people are allowed on each team?
A: 2-10 people.

Q: How can my team participate?
A: Submit a video link to your team’s performance. A team can choose to participate in ONE of the two streams: non-heritage and heritage (see below):

  • Students of non-Chinese origin

     

    OR

     

    Students of Chinese origin born outside of regions/countries with Chinese as an official or social language, who do not speak any Chinese or Chinese dialects (including Cantonese) and whose parents do not speak any Chinese.

     

    *The stream a team participates in is contingent on the team members’ language backgrounds, which may or may not be consistent with the courses they are taking. If you are unsure about your qualification, please consult your recommending instructor.

  • Students who were born outside of regions/countries with Chinese as an official or social language but were raised in an environment where Mandarin or another Chinese dialect (including Cantonese) was spoken and speaks or minimally understands the language.

     

    OR

     

    Students of non-Chinese origin who have acquired a certain level of Chinese language proficiency (especially speaking and listening) by living, studying, or working in a Chinese speaking country/region for an extended time.

     

    *The stream a team participates in is contingent on the team members’ language backgrounds, which may or may not be consistent with the courses they are taking. If you are unsure about your qualification, please consult your recommending instructor.

Record your team singing with a device that ensures high-definition (HD) video quality, then edit the video with added effects. Please do NOT add a watermark or logo to your video. Remember to save the video in high-definition MP4 (1080P) format.

Please see below for more detailed instructions:

  • · All accompanying music MUST be a KARAOKE version of the song without singing (instrumental tracks only).
    · All vocals must be done by ALL and ONLY by team members.
    · Songs MUST be performed in Mandarin.
  • · All team members MUST be visible in the video.
    · Suggested video length: 5-7 min. (no more than 10 min., including the introduction).
  • A brief introduction at the beginning of the video with the following information (suggested duration = 30 sec. to 1 min., no more than 3 min.), which includes:

    · A brief introduction of your team.
    · The title of the selected song in Chinese.
    · Which university you are studying Chinese at, and 1-2 sentences about your Chinese learning experience at that university.

    You are encouraged to present your introductions in Chinese, but beginners can use English as wellPlease keep your video PG-13.

    · Please keep your video PG-13, inappropriate videos will be disregarded.
    · NO depiction of alcohol, alcohol usage, or scenes of a similar nature in the video.
    · NO political propaganda or controversial figures, icons, etc. in the video.
    · Do NOT add watermarks or logos in the video.
  • · The video is required to be in landscape orientation, with high-definition MP4 format (1080P).
    · Mobile phones or other camera devices can be used to guarantee high-definition (HD) video quality.
    · Visual effects are highly recommended and encouraged, as is the inclusion of subtitles.
  • Video Title in English with the following information:

    · Team name-Institute Abbreviation-Full name of the recommending instructor
    (e.g., Team Bravo-SFU-John Lee.mp4)

Elect Team Leader and Identify Recommending Instructor

Each participating team will need to elect a team leader AND identify a recommending instructor from their own university.

Upload Video to Google Drive

Upload the saved video (high definition MP4 (1080P) format) to your own Google Drive, then get an editable link to the video file. Please make sure to set the link as “Editor” mode.

  • Please note that Google Drive is used for this event, so be aware of the privacy concerns related to Google and take precautions in using the service.

Submit Video through Qualtics

Either the recommending instructor or the team leader will complete the survey on behalf of the team. Before filling in the survey, they will need the following information:

  • The recommending instructor’s FULL NAME (First, Last) and email address.
  • The team leader’s FULL NAME (First, Last) and email address.
  • The Chinese and English names of your team.
  • All the team members’ FULL NAMES (First, Last), and their current Chinese course and section number (or highest level of Chinese course in university).
  • The Google Drive link to the team’s singing video.

Please note that the survey will ask whether each participant has agreed to release their image concerning this contest, which includes both the image in the submitted video and images photographed at the onsite Final Round competition.

By partaking in the contest and submitting the registration form on the Qualtrics survey, each participant is consenting to their image release for videos and photos from both the preliminary and final round of the contest on public websites for educational purposes.

Before answering this pertinent question, the person who fills out the survey should consult all team members to ensure their agreement to the image release.
