CHIN143 and CHIN243 are Chinese language courses offered by UBC’s Asian Studies department. A series of classroom activities has encouraged heritage students to trace back the origins of their cultural identity, experience the diverse cultures surrounding them, explore their connection to the world, and define their unique identity. Today, students from both classes have presented their outstanding final projects. Please follow their footsteps and listen closely to what they want to say.

History is like a diary with the dynasties of the past and the past of mankind. Its existence does not make us perfect, but it can make us not make the same mistakes. This is also its strength. Culture and tradition are built on our rich civilization. Everyone, no matter where they are or how different their cultural thoughts are, is a member of this world. Everyone is doing what they can for a better tomorrow. Contribute, we are all more tolerant. Tolerance and we learn to understand each other. The constant evolution of viruses indicates that we will fight against them endlessly: our enemies are viruses, not us. Even viruses can share their DNA, Why can’t humans share more love?” — 孙宇佳(Sūnyǔjiā), CHIN 143 Student

–Everyone’s childhood experiences are so similar yet so different. Through this experience, some found their comfort zone, some overcame hardships that life threw at them, some are still trying to find their place within this big world. We are brought together by our common language, we have had the privilege of spending time and learning together because of it.

— Li-Jung Lee, Lecturer for CHIN 143 003, and CHIN 243 003
