2020 Chinese Language Program Singing Contest
Do you feel bored during the pandemic? Do you miss learning Chinese together with many other classmates? Do you enjoy singing? If you have answered “yes” to all these questions, welcome to the “The Voices of Our Community”: 2020 Chinese Language Program Singing Contest! The Chinese Language Program at UBC aims to foster a greater sense of community among passionate Chinese learners by holding this wonderful singing competition. Not only is it a fabulous opportunity for you to demonstrate your Chinese speaking and singing skills, but it will also be great fun, not to mention the attractive prizes and bonus marks! Why wait still? Come and join the singing contest and become part of the “Voices of Our Community!”

- You are able to participate if:
- You are taking a Chinese language course!
- Courses below CHIN 450
- You are taking a Chinese language course!

- You love learning Chinese! Singing or just want to participate!
- You will get:
- A great singing competition experience!
- A chance to virtually hang out with your classmates during online learning!
- A 0.5% Bonus Mark toward your participation mark!
- A chance of winning up to $300 in prizes!
- You can sign up for the competition by letting your instructor know that:
- You want to team up with your classmates in a group of at least 5 people, and your instructor will help your team with practicing and videotaping!
- You want to team up with friends you know who are also taking Chinese in a unit of at least 5 people, and you are free to modify anything of your performance!
- You want to do both of the above! Get the chances to win the prizes twice!
- You will be singing ONE of the below songs:

- Your performance will be evaluated according to the following rubric:
- Your video should be:
- Recorded on Zoom with your camera on!
- Editing is encouraged!
- Big smile on your face 😊!
- Include the group name and song name!
- Bonus: Wearing your UBC or Asian Studies clothes!

- Submission details:
1. Recording:
Record your group singing with Zoom, and then edit the video with added effects. Save the video in either MP4 or MOV format. Below are two example videos for reference:

【Video Requirements】
- The video should be no longer than 5 minutes.
- Record the video in full-screen mode and ensure the recording is of good quality.
- All participants need to have their camera on and create a lively and enthusiastic atmosphere;
- Each participant should position her/himself at the center of the screen and show her/his head and shoulders.
- The participants are strongly encouraged to add creative effects to the video.
- The video should include the group name and the song name.
- Bonus marks will be given if participants wear red clothes or clothing with UBC logos.
2. Uploading:
Upload the saved video (MOV or MP4 format) to your own Google Drive, and then, get the sharing link to the video file. Please make sure to set the link in the “Editor” mode.

3. Qualtrics:
Fill in the Qualtrics survey for the singing contest:

- If the group is organized by a course instructor, then s/he will finish the survey on behalf of the group.
- If the group is completely initiated by students, then one participant will complete this step instead.
- Please note that the survey will ask whether each participant has agreed to release their image. By partaking in the contest and submitting the Qualtrics survey, each participant consents to their image release in the video on public websites. Before answering the pertinent question, the person who fills out the survey should consult all her/his group members in advance to ensure their agreement to the image release.
- You will know the competition result by:
- An announcement on December 24, 2020, and the winning submissions will be featured on the Chinese Language Program’s social media (i.e., IG, FB, and website) and newsletter, and also the Department of Asian Studies’ newsletter.
Note
By participating in the singing competition, you are giving the Chinese Language Program permission to use and/or post your image and caption onto social media, website, and newsletter, unless you state otherwise in your submission.
