Welcome to our 2020-2021 School Year!

On behalf of the UBC Chinese Language Program, we extend a warm welcome to all students for the 2020-2021 academic year! This year marks a new beginning for all of us, as we adjust to our unique circumstances. Nonetheless, we hope your school year is filled with learning and opportunity. More importantly, don’t hesitate to reach out for support when you need it. We look forward to seeing everyone during our online classes and events!

As one of the largest language departments at UBC, we currently offer 36 courses to over 3000 students. Our courses range from language courses offered to both heritage and non-heritage students, to literature courses that focus on both classical and modern literature.

Whether you’ve been attending Saturday Chinese school all your life, or you’ve never heard a single word of Chinese being spoken before, our language courses are offered to students with a wide range of backgrounds. These range from 100-level basic Mandarin, to advanced business-level Chinese courses.

Our literature courses cover a diverse range of Chinese media, from poetry to contemporary fiction. Students have the opportunity to learn about the beauty of Chinese literature through the lens of both ancient history and modern culture.

As our classes start up again, we will have many events and activities for everyone to participate in. Look forward to our revamped Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year events, among other new activities. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store.

Although we are scattered across the world, we are united by our love of Chinese language and culture. We welcome you back to the Chinese Language Program as we approach this school year together!
