Non-Intensive Basic Chinese II – Part I (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 231 (3) –Term 1 (4hrs/week)

CHIN 231 is a continuation of CHIN 133 for non-heritage students . This course continues to develop the students’ four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Lectures are coordinated with drill sessions, on-line resources and field trips to help students acquire more Chinese vocabulary, sentence patterns and syntax in an integrated, communicative approach. By the end of this course, students are expected to comprehend most of the essential aspects of modern Chinese grammar, to be able to communicate in various real-life situations in a Mandarin- speaking environment, and to read and write with an active vocabulary of 750 simplified characters.

Prerequisite : CHIN 133, 134 or equivalent

Placement interview : required (except for continuing students with advancement approval from previous class)

CHIN 233 (3) –Term 2 (4hrs/week)

CHIN 233 is a continuation of CHIN 231 for non-heritage students . This course places emphasis on the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. By the end of this course, students are expected to comprehend all of the essential aspects of modern Chinese grammar, to be able to communicate in various real-life situations in a Mandarin- speaking environment with accuracy and fluency, and to read and write with an active vocabulary of 1000 simplified characters.

Prerequisite : CHIN 231 or equivalent

Intensive Basic Chinese II (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 234 (6) –Term 2 (8hrs/week)

CHIN 234 is a continuation of CHIN 134 , the second intensive introductory course for non-heritage students . This course also places emphasis on the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Lectures are coordinated with drill sessions, on-line resources and field trips to help students acquire more Chinese vocabulary, sentence patterns and syntax in an integrated, communicative approach. By the end of this course, students are expected to comprehend all of the essential aspects of modern Chinese grammar, to be able to communicate in various real-life situations in a Mandarin- speaking environment, and to read and write with an active vocabulary of 1000 simplified characters.
