Non-Intensive Basic Chinese II – Part I (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 231 (3) –Term 1 (4hrs/week)

Feeling good about being able to understand Chinese? Why not more? CHIN 231 is a continuation of CHIN 133. The course aims to build up more complex language syntax while incorporating real-life scenarios. By the end of the course, students should be able to give a short speech about their daily lives and comprehend most of the essential aspects of modern Chinese grammar. The course also incorporates oral practice with Chinese native speakers to help students experience a face to face conversation.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Intermediate-Low Level Language Proficiency.

Textbook : Integrated Chinese (Simplified Character 3rd Edition) Level 1, Part 2

Prerequisite : CHIN 133, 134 or equivalent

Placement interview : required (except for continuing students with advancement approval from previous class)

CHIN231 Basic Chinese II: Part 1 (Non-Heritage) Sections

Skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Mandarin Chinese, active vocabulary of about 750 Chinese words, and basic grammar. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 231 or CHIN 105 or CHIN 234.

Non-Intensive Basic Chinese II – Part II (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 233 (3) –Term 2 (4hrs/week)

Being able to express yourself while understanding others are the keys to verbal communications. CHIN 233 is a continuation of CHIN 231, aiming to not only polish one’s reading and writing skills, but also focusing on self expression and storytelling via speaking and listening. By the end of this course, students will be able to communicate with native speakers in a casual setting. The course also incorporates oral practice with Chinese native speakers to help students experience a face to face conversation.

This course corresponds with the ACTFL Intermediate-Mid Level Language Proficiency.

Continuation of CHIN 231. Credit will be granted for only one of CHIN 233 or CHIN 107, or CHIN 234.

Intensive Basic Chinese II (for non-heritage students)

CHIN 234 (6) –Term 2 (8hrs/week)

The fastest way to master a language is to incorporate it in our lives. CHIN 234 is a course continuation of CHIN 133. The course aims to build up more complex language syntax while incorporating real-life scenarios. The course not only polishes one’s reading and writing skills, but also focuses on self expression and storytelling via speaking and listening. The course incorporates oral practice with Chinese native speakers to help students experience a face to face conversation. By the end of this course, students will be able to communicate with native speakers in a casual setting.
