Date: Tuesday, September 4, 2018

Time: 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Location: Asian Centre Auditorium

On Tuesday, September 4th, The Department of Asian Studies hosted their annual Welcome Back Lunch event. The event was brought together by the vast selection of Asian language programs offered at UBC.

Various booths of activities were set up to welcome returning Asian Studies students as well as promote the courses for those interesting in learning a new language.

The Chinese Language Program had Chinese calligraphy and a showcase of traditional Han Chinese clothing. The Japanese Language Program instructors wore kimonos and taught students some traditional dance steps. The Korean Language Program taught students simple conversation phrases. The South Asia Language program provided free henna tattoos, drumming and chanting with a Sanskrit instructor.

During the event, students were given the opportunity to mingle and converse with one another. Students were able to find others who pursued in the same major or program and also had time to interact with their professors. A group of Asian Studies alumni was invited to share their stories and experiences with students. The department provided tasty confectionery and lunch for everyone during the event.

The instructors from the Chinese Language Program and many volunteers came to help booth at the event. Some volunteers helped to create a Chinese name for the non-heritage students, while some helped to write students’ Chinese name in calligraphy on a given bookmark as a souvenir. Other professors and volunteers approached the students to introduce the Chinese courses and upcoming interesting events to potential Chinese-learning students at UBC.

The Asian Studies Welcome Back Lunch was a very successful event to start off the new school year. Many people came to participate, and there were many potential students for the Chinese courses at UBC. The department would like to thank all the students and faculty members for volunteering and supporting the event.
